88th Precinct

Crime is up 24 percent for the week of November 3 – November 9, 2014, in the 88th Precinct, covering the neighborhoods of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

According to CompStat, there were 26 total reported incidents in the 88th precinct, compared to 21 incidents during this same week last year. For the 28-day cycle, crime is down 2 percent, with 83 reported incidents, compared to 85 incidents during this same time period in 2013.

And year to date, crime is down 2 percent, with 921 reported incidents, compared to 943 during this same time period last year.

Year to date, there have been two reported murders, compared to five at this same time last year.

The biggest percentage drop in crime so far is seen in the number of rapes, down 67 percent, with 3 reported so far this year, compared to 9 at this same time last year. And the biggest percentage jump is in the number of burglaries, a 26 percent increase, with 150 reported so far this year, compared to 119 last year.

Robbery

On Tuesday, November 11, at around 7:45pm, a 28-year-old man was robbed of his cell phone while walking down N. Oxford St between Park and Myrtle avenues. The man said he was bending over to pick up some bags off the sidewalk when someone snatched his mobile device. The perpetrator ran down Park Ave and turned on to S. Portland heading towards Fort Greene Park, according to police. The victim then approached someone he saw standing with the thief prior to the incident. He asked if he knew the guy, and the guy said, “Don’t follow us.” He then punched the victim in the face and ran down Park Avenue towards Navy Street, NYPD officials stated.

Attempted Robbery, Arrest

On Thursday, November 13, at around 4:11pm, a band of teens tried to tried to rob another teen waiting for a Myrtle Avenue bus. The 16-year-old victim said he was at a bus stop between Clinton and Waverly avenues when a group of seven to 10 high-schoolers attacked him. He fought back and the crew took off running down Myrtle, and later reported the incident to police. Police arrested a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old the next day.
