DV Awareness Month 161Wednesday morning, City Councilmember Laurie A. Cumbo, joined by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Rosemonde Pierre-Louis, commissioner for the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence and other citywide elected officials, posted up at subway stations across the city in a campaign to raise awareness around the problem of domestic violence.DV Awareness Month 104Cumbo, chair of the Committee on Women’s Issues, organized the event in honor of “NYC Go Purple Day,” and Domestic Violence Month. The electeds and other city officials used the opportunity to greet morning commuters and encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence in their homes to know that they are not alone and that help is available.DV Awareness Month 043“In purple, the de Blasio Administration, the New York City Council, and advocates stand in solidarity with the survivors of domestic violence pledging to work collaboratively to bring an end to domestic violence,” said Cumbo.

“I would like to thank Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Council Member Laurie Cumbo, and the entire New York City Council for sponsoring the NYC Go Purple Visibility Day to shine the light on domestic violence in all five boroughs.” said Commissioner Rose Pierre-Louis. “It is my hope that through the City Council’s continued awareness raising efforts we can.”DV Awareness Month 082“Domestic Violence is a sad part of American culture that has destroyed families and communities – from sons needing to learn that violence doesn’t equal manhood, to daughters feeling trapped in the cycle of abuse their mothers sustained, to the tragic end that leads to death.

“So today, ‘Go Purple Day,’ is designed not only to save those are victims of domestic abuse but save those who have witnessed the horrible occurrence of domestic abuse. Love yourself and talk, talk, talk ‘til you got to walk, walk, walk. Keep your hands to yourself,” said Council Member Andy King, co-chair of the Black, Latino & Asian Caucus.
