Mayor Bill de Blasio and state Sen. Jeffrey Klein announced an expansion of New York City’s speed camera program, involving the addition of 120 more automatic ticket-issuing devices near public schools, reported the Observer.

The city already has installed 23 new cameras since January at schools around the five boroughs. The mayor’s plan will bring that number to 143 over the next several weeks.

“Our kids are going to be safer walking to school and coming home becasue of this new enforcement,” said de Blasio.

But Klein expressed regret that such a program was even necessary and that drivers continue to exceed the speed limit on streets where children learn.

“We’re sending a very important message,” Mr. Klein said. “If you’re going to hit the accelerator, you’re going to get a ticket.”
