This week, one of the series’s venues is right here in Fort Greene at the Trilok School:

On Thursday, May 22, Rooftop Films will present a special sneak preview screening of Lukas Moodysson’s We Are The Best, with a special performance by all-girl teen rockers Petal Wars.

We Are The Best
(Lukas Moodysson | 90 min.)

Being a 13-year-old girl can be a pain, especially when no one seems to listen to you. What do you do? Get loud! Get angry! Get some beat up old instruments and pound out power chords to lyrics about real issues: saving the children of Africa and dissing Gym class.

In We Are the Best! two precocious young Swedes, Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) and Klara (Mira Grosin) form a punk band–despite not owning any instruments, not knowing how to play even simple chords, and being told by everyone that punk is dead.we are bestSince neither has any musical training, they’re forced to recruit a fellow outcast—a reserved, religious peer named Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne), who happens to be classically trained guitarist. Cast as outsiders by their classmates, the trio embrace the liberating, raucous sounds of ‘80s European punk and find solace from bullies, embarrassing parents, and the ever-confusing presence of boys.

Swedish auteur Lukas Moodysson adapts his wife Coco’s semi-autobiographical graphic novel for his latest film, a vibrant tale of the trials and tribulations of three pre-teen punks rambling around Stockholm in 1982.

A return to the more life-affirming films of his early career (Show Me Love, Together), Moodysson embraces punk’s ethos and crafts a work that eschews easy answers. We Are the Best! embraces those amateurish moments that allow people to experiment, innovate and have fun. The result is a paean to DIY culture and the power of rebellion.

Prior to the film, “PetalWar,” an all-girl teen rock band from NY’s Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls, will perform a set of sugar, spice and rock ‘n’ roll!

This is a wonderful film! I saw it at a sneak preview at BAM a few weeks ago.
