Citi Bike, New York City’s bicycle-sharing service, announced that it will implement a series of price hikes this month.
All bike-share users — both members and non-members — will see higher fees for time spent riding outside of the included 45 minute mark, with members paying an additional 20 cents per minute, while non-members will incur an additional 30 cents per minute charge starting today.
The fee for non-members to unlock a bike for a single ride will also rise to $4.79 from $4.49.
Using an electric bike will also cost more, as fees increase to 20 cents per minute for members and to 30 cents per minute for non-members.
Beginning January 29, the annual membership fee is set to rise to $219.99 per year from the current $205 annual fee.
In light of the yearly increase, Citi Bike introduced a new perk where returning members receive 60 free e-bike minutes upon renewal. Existing members will earn a prorated amount of minutes until their membership renews.
The bike-share program said the cost increases will help support its “growing operations and continued expansion,” which includes station and e-bike upgrades.
The price for a reduced fare membership will remain the same at $5 per month.
